WINE TASTING IN THE SHOP TONIGHT, 5-7PM

We're beating the holiday rush and getting ahead of the bad weather with this special Wednesday tasting (squeezing in one more for the season––doors open/fans on/fingers crossed) with Peter from Vineyard Road.

We're a little (or a lot) short on time for decent notes, so here's a brief lowdown:

Weingut Schödl Brut Nature Méthode Traditionelle Blanc de Blancs Flaschengärung NV, $36.99

Three siblings doing things right in Weinviertal.

Organic/biodynamic, 90% Chardonnay/10% Pinot Blanc, Champagne method. Ripe green apples, pears, brioche, rich & full of salty freshness and precise minerality. The grapes are hand harvested at the ideal ripeness point into small boxes followed by gentle whole bunch pressing. The wine matures for ten months in stainless steel tanks and big oak casks. After bottling for second fermentation, it rests for 24-30 month on the lees, which contributes to the creamy texture. Hand riddled and disgorged.

Alexandre Brault Bourgogne Cote d'Or Blanc 2020, $34.99

This is a lovely white Burgundy from a young producer who unfortunately passed away just a couple months ago. Alexandre Brault had worked as a winemaker and manager for Maison Alex Gambal, which he had hoped to purchase, but, as often happens in Burgundy, the price was too high; the "wine giant" Boisset family went on to acquirethe Gambal holdings.  Here's a Wine Enthusiast article that briefly mentions Brault just prior to him striking out on his own. We'll taste, and toast his memory.

Stein Riesling Alfer Hölle 1900 2020, $66.99

Here's Vom Boden's write up:

Stein’s “1900” bottling is one of the more extraordinary wines of the Mosel.

Here we have a historic site, the second oldest producing Riesling vineyard in the Mosel with just over 1,000 vines planted in the year 1900 (thus the name of the cuvée). This is a vineyard Ulli Stein tends like a garden. The wine is fermented in neutral barrel and Stein allows it to find its own balance. Thus we have in 2020 a wine with the density and heft of a Spätlese, yet with only about 17 grams residual sugar. Combined with the acid of 2020, the wine feels somewhere between Feinherb and nearly dry.

Tasting notes are hard in this case; what is truly extraordinary about this wine is simply the breadth of what it offers, which, in the simplest terms, is something like everything. Allow the wine to unfurl (decanting is a good idea, or just give the bottle a few hours to open) and it is one of the most exotic, perfumed wines of the Mosel; explosively aromatic, crushed flowers and slate, ripe, luscious, glycerin-rich stone fruits, layer after layer like a mille-feuille of apricot, quince and slate.

Yet for all this exoticism, the “1900” always, always has an uncanny sense of balance – there is a quivering and clean counterbalance to the baroque flourishes. The small, thick-skinned berries of the old vines retained acidity and offer the wine not only minerals and rigor, but even a tense, green-resinous grip, something like pine needles ground up with mint.

It is wines like this that simply transcend those easy categories we use to organize the world and our experiences. Thus, words come up short.

Weingut Schodl St. Laurent Dorf Dorf Dorflagen 2020, $19.99

Organic Sankt Laurent, fermented in stainless, matured one year in big oak barrels in an old natural loess cellar. Sour cherries, raspberries, brambly fruit, woodsy-spicy notes, juicy & smooth.

La Calcinara Il Cacciatore di Sogni Rosso Conero DOC 2019, $21.99

Organic Montepulciano & Merlot from a small brother & sister operated property on the slopes of Mt. Conero. Rich, full-bodied, dark fruit, notes of coffee, leather, spice, & Mediterranean herbs. Chewy tannins. A mouthful.

We were in Wine Enthusiast as one of the Best Wine Shops in the U.S.; According to Pros! That's crazy talk, but we'll accept it.
