100% Treixadura from three hectares of 15-20 year-old vines across two vineyards. The vines are planted on granite, are not irrigated, and are farmed organically. Fermentation is with wild yeasts for 30-40 days. The wine is then aged for 7 months on lees in stainless steel, with a third in 33L French oak barrels. It’s only lightly filtered before bottling, with minimal SO2.
This is an aromatic white, with notes of basil, nectarines, and lemon/lime. The palate starts out crisp and lean with spicy/rocky minerality. As the wine opens up it softens and reveals pineapple, passionfruit, and buttery undertones from its time in oak. It finishes a touch creamy, with hints of pastry and baked apple.
Ribeiro is the oldest appellation in Galicia, in northwest Spain, situated just above Portugal. In addition to Ribeiro, which means “river bank” or “riverside” in the Galician language, Galicia includes the regions Valdeorras, Rías baixas, Ribeira Sacra, and Monterrei. With mountain ranges on both its Atlantic and continental sides, Galicia has developed somewhat in isolation from the rest of Spain, and is geographically and culturally closer to Portugal than to Madrid. Those same mountains provide natural barriers that protect the land from Atlantic storms and create a cool climate with plenty of sunlight and rainfall, though the summers can be dry.
