Aboriou is a red grape from the Cotoïdes family (Cabernet Franc, Fer Servadou, Prunelard). It was once mixed with Bordeaux for its dark, red color. Abouriou means “early” in Occitan.
Antoine Bernardin grew up in vineyards, studied viticulture, and worked at numerous biodynamic estates around the world before settling down at this tiny property in Roussillon. His domaine focuses on regional grapes. This red blend is whole cluster fermented in old barrels. It somehow manages to be both dark and brooding AND fruity and inviting. There's a hint of animal wildness, not barnyard, more like musk, and a lifted sweet/flowery/sandalwood essence floating above and around a scrubby earthiness that is quite compelling. Have it with cassoulet, ribs, hard cheeses, and other hearty meals.
