It's Friday, February 19th, the 416th day of 2020.

Not too much new–those terrible tariffs, now on all still wine from France, Spain, and Germany (and Scotch, Irish whiskey, Cognac, other grape brandies, etc, etc) continue to put a damper on the fun and the margins–anyone have a direct line to Biden? He can undo them with a stroke of the pen (a sharpie, even!) via executive order. Doing this through regular channels (via the as-of-now unconfirmed US Trade rep) would give us only two shots this year: this month (unlikely) and August. The industry can't wait that long.

Anyway, here's a bit of what landed in the shop this past week:

Querciabella Mongrana 2017, $26.99

Querciabella planted its first vineyards in Maremma, on Tuscany's "wild and untamed" southern coast, in 2000. From the start they farmed biodynamically, here's what they have to say about that: "Anyone who doubts the benefits of biodynamic farming should take a walk in our vineyards in Chianti Classico or Maremma in springtime. It’s an incredible experience. The hum and buzz of insects are almost deafening. Rare bird species, partridges and wood pigeons, wild animals like hare, and roe deer all roam free. This is how a healthy ecosystem should look like, not the desolate, lifeless picture of commercial vineyards." True words.

Mongrana is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot fermented in stainless steel and aged in cement. It's a lively, freshly fruity, yet earthy, savory, mineral-driven, and age-worthy (at least until the end of this decade) Tuscan red that will please everyone from your zio to your crunchy pal.

Domaine Saint Nicolas Les Clous Blanc 2016, $25.99

Thierry Michon is a longtime fave at the shop, and we pick up his wines whenever we see them available. Another biodynamic producer, Thierry took the added step of buying up the properties around his vineyards so that he could protect against any other grower who might use chemicals. His vineyards sit at the extreme southern end of the Loire delta, in Fièfs Vendéens, right on the Atlantic. His wines all portray the salty, seaside freshness you'd expect, along with depth and the elegance of a deft-hand in the cellar. This 2016 is in a nice place right now. It's mostly Chenin, followed by Chardonnay, and just 10% Grolleau Gris. 2016 was a good year for Chenin, when it wasn't completely destroyed by hail and frost. Les Clous is fermented in oak vats and stainless steel, aged for 6 months in Stockinger foudres, and bottled unfiltered and unfined with total sulfites at 18mg/L.

We got a teeny-tiny bit of Teutonic Pinot Meunier.

Remember when we used to have our cheap cart full of close-outs and end of vintage deals? Well we've started that up again, virtually. At the moment, there are some fantastic deals on 2019 rosé. We'll throw more stuff in the "cart" as we get them, and as we decide on the items whose time has come. Check back often, as inventory will change! If you prefer to buy in person at the door, please check out the inventory online first, and then let us know what you'd like to purchase via phone or email.

For beer, we got a little Buttonwoods Cool Arcade DIPA and we hear that we'll be getting a few cases of Heady Topper later today...but we haven't seen it yet. So check back on that too!

In non-booze news, anyone else do the Great Backyard Bird Count last weekend? We got some great visitors in Providence! It's as if they knew...

Don't forget to look up.

Cheers!
