Dão is located in north-central Portugal, further south than Vinho Verde and the Douro, and inland from Bairrada. The region is surrounded by granite mountains on three sides, protecting it from cool maritime weather conditions from the west, and the warmer, more arid conditions from the east and the south. Dão benefits from long, warm, dry summers and abundant winter rainfall, although many of the vineyards are planted on gentle slopes, on soils of mainly weathered granite with a sandy/loamy texture low in organic matter—which means free draining, which can lead to water stress issues during ripening.
