The Lodi AVA sits at the northern end of California’s Central Valley and 100 miles inland from the San Francisco Bay. It’s large, about twice the size of the entire Sonoma County. Lodi has a hot Mediterranean climate which is moderated by cooling afternoon winds both from the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and breezes off the Bay travel far inland. The windy conditions reduce the risk of fungal diseases and frosts, as does the low rainfall. Vineyards are on flatlands of free-draining sandy and clay loam soils. The Mokelumne River flows through the AVA and is a source of irrigation.
Borden Ranch occupies the far north-east side of the vast Lodi appellation, as the Sierra Foothills begin their dramatic rise off the great Central Valley floor. Precedent’s Chenin is from vines planted in 1982 on pink granite and quartz; these silica and quartz rich soils are well-suited to produce graceful, complex white wines with depth and presence.
