There are fewer than a dozen producers in this obscure area of Umbria, where Montemelino produces tiny amounts of wine and olive oil on a 10 hectare farm, 4 of which are under vine, and planted to Grechetto, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Gamay di Trasimeno, which is actually Grenache. Farming here is all organic, grapes are hand-harvested, and naturally fermented and aged in large Slavonian oak barrels that rest both under the farm house and in a tiny chapel on the property.
