Grolleau is an ancient grape variety commonly found west of the city of Tours where it has traditionally been overcropped for the production of the indifferently sweet Rosé d’Anjou as well as lots of undistinguished sparkling rosé. The variety’s tendency to produce abundant yields that are low in alcohol and high in acidity has not engendered much love for this variety among critics. Like its cousin Pinot Noir, it comes in three colors: Noir, Gris & Blanc. Despite its less than stellar reputation, there are a few growers who have recognized the potential for this variety.
Grolleau Noir and Gris can be quite captivating with a perfumed, and delicate balance between floral and red fruit aromas, especially when care is taken in the vineyard and cellar. Such is the case with this sparkling rosé rightfully named Si Irrésistible. Made from a blend of Grolleau Gris & Noir this wine is aged just under 9 months sur latte to preserve the delicate primary fruit character at the expense of the AOP Saumur Sparkling label.
Hand-harvested Grolleau Noir & Grolleau Gris from 20-60 year old vines. Aromatic, red fruit and flow..
