March 2023 wine club pick.
Contini is the oldest continuously operating winery on the island of Sardinia. Founded in 1898, the estate practices organic farming and boasts four generations of family ownership and experience. They are one of the few remaining producers of Vernaccia di Oristano, an unfortified wine aged under flor, a bit like a dry oloroso sherry, that was the first DOC established in Sardinia in 1971. While this wine has fallen off the radar of most wine drinkers, it’s still a focus of the estate.
This Vermentino is from a 14 hectare vineyard in Gallura, on the northeastern coast of Sardegna. The vineyards are planted 200 to 400 meters above sea level on granitic soils. This is a lovely and lively bottle of wine. The sailboat on the label really makes us want to float away into an island sunset.
